CLEVELAND -- The brother of the late R&B singer Gerald LeVert was pronounced dead just before midnight Sunday at Lutheran Hospital. The Cuyahoga County Coroner's office said Sean LeVert's body was taken to the hospital from the Cuyahoga County Jail.
A jail official says a guard checked on Sean LeVert last night and noticed he was having difficulty breathing. Medical help was called, but could not save the singer. Jail officials say they were not aware of any pre-existing medical condition.
Sean LeVert, 39, of Streetsboro, was the younger brother of Gerald LeVert and was a member of the band "LeVert."
The warden says Sean Levert was being held in jail for allegedly failing to pay about $80,000 in child support. He had been in the jail for about a week.
The cause of his death is not immediately known. Coroner's spokesman Powell Caesar says an autopsy on Sean LeVert's body will likely be done this morning (Monday).
Powell also said toxicology tests are being done but those results are usually not expected back for 4 to 6 weeks.
LeVert is an R&B group that was formed in Cleveland in 1984 with Sean and Gerald Levert, the sons of O'Jays founder Eddie Levert, as well as Marc Gordon.
Gerald Levert, a Grammy award winner, was 40 when he died in his sleep at his home in Newbury in November 2006.
The LeVert family has a street named after them in their native Canton.
